A hand-carved soapstone jar on a turned pedestal foot, incised all over with stylized fish, leaves, and a banded diamond border — the etched lines filled with chalky white against warm, streaky brown stone. The domed lid carries a matching school of fish around a little knob finial, and lifts off to a smoothly hollowed interior. The kind of tactile, handmade piece that earns its keep holding jewelry or trinkets on a dresser, or just sitting out as sculpture. The etched fish motif is classic East African soapstone work.
