American artist Lyn Fisher reinterprets Paul Cézanne's 1882 portrait L'Artiste, Son fils — the original of which hangs in Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum — in this mid-century pastel. Blocks of cobalt, emerald, and sienna describe the sitter's contemplative face, with rapid charcoal outlines keeping the composition rooted in drawing. The saturated color planes give it an energy that goes well beyond academic study.
