The complete first year of Avant Garde, issues #1 through #5, January to November 1968. Ralph Ginzburg edited it and Herb Lubalin designed it. The magazine's logo later became the ITC Avant Garde typeface, and the big square issues are still a touchstone for designers.

What's inside:

  • #1, January 1968: Richard Lindner's "Ice" on the cover, drawings by Muhammad Ali, The Fugs, and the "No More War!" poster contest judged by Richard Avedon, Alexander Calder and Milton Glaser.
  • #2, March 1968: "The Marilyn Monroe Trip," Bert Stern's serigraphic prints from his last sitting with Marilyn, plus Roald Dahl, Picasso and Einstein's letter to Freud.
  • #3, May 1968: 19 artists redesign the one-dollar bill, Andy's Girls, Norman Mailer, and Ho Chi Minh's prison poems.
  • #4, September 1968: George Tooker's "Landscape with Figures" on the cover, Arthur Miller, LeRoi Jones, and the Playhouse of the Ridiculous.
  • #5, November 1968: Tom Wesselmann's "Seascape #17" on the cover and the "No More War!" contest winners.

Sold together as a set of five. A great find for a graphic design library, a coffee table or anyone who loves the late '60s. Contains artistic nudity.
