A 19th century American spun brass pail made under Hiram W. Hayden's famous 1851 patent, the process that let Connecticut brass makers spin a vessel from a single sheet instead of hammering it by hand. Fine spinning rings run around the inside, the rim is rolled, and a hand-forged iron bail swings from cast brass ears fixed with copper rivets.
The base is stamped with the Hayden patent mark: patented Dec. 16, 1851, extended Dec. 15, 1865, and reissued Feb. 13, 1866. Makers only used this stamp while the extended patent was in force, which dates this pail to about 1866 to 1872, just after the Civil War.
Lovely as a log bin by the fireplace, a planter, or a catchall for kindling or throws.
