A large, richly textured oil on canvas by Connecticut artist Barbara Nerreau, dated 1973. A tabby cat naps beneath a Windsor chair beside a trailing philodendron, painted in thick impasto with knotty pine paneling, coarse sisal, terracotta, and the cat's softly striped coat all built up with a palette knife. Earth-rich umbers, mossy greens, and warm straw create a quietly domestic scene with real presence at 30" x 24".
Signed "B. Nerreau" on the back and dated 1973. A back inscription notes the painting was "on loan to J. & M. Fitzgerald, 9/96." Painted edges allow for frameless display.
Barbara Nerreau was a Connecticut artist who earned her BFA in Fine Arts from Skidmore College and continued her studies throughout her life. She was the mother of Ridgefield, CT fine artist and portrait painter Claudia Noel Nerreau.
