A humble, hard-working little stool hewn from a single thick plank, standing on four splayed round legs pegged through the top with visible mortise-and-tenon joinery — the kind of honest country construction you can read at a glance. A hand-cut slot through the center of the seat works as a carry handle, so it moves from room to room with one hand. Decades of use have left it with a warm, dry patina and all the dings and tool marks that make a primitive piece worth having.
