This delicate mid-century child’s bust is signed “I. Gallo” on the neck and incised Made in France. Sculpted in a fine white composition that convincingly mimics alabaster, the young girl’s softly modelled features rest atop a sleek black onyx marble cube, marrying classical portraiture with modern French décor.
Spanish-born artist Ignacio Gallo (active 1910-1935) was celebrated for intimate statuettes of children, bathers, and dancers. Post-war French ateliers reproduced several of his most charming figures—this piece likely dates to the late-1940s – 1960s.
